The great escape: Friars beat Boston College

On the doorstep of one of the most crushing defeats in years, Providence College survived in regulation and then ran away from Boston College in overtime for a 98-89 win at the Garden.

The Friars did everything they could to lose the game in the second half, blowing a 24-point lead. PC missed 5 straight free throws and turning the ball over twice in crunch time. But 3-pointers by Jeff Xavier and Weyinmi Efejuku in the final 1:05 of regulation tied the score, 76-76.

In the extra session, Efejuku dominated and led PC to the win. Efejuku led PC with 21 points, Xavier added 20.

Frosh Corey Raji had BC with 24 points and Tyrese Rice added 25. Click here to read the box score from projo Stats.

Adamonis moves up in Q School

Brad Adamonis continued his climb up the standings in PGA Tour Qualifying School yesterday, while Anna Grzebien had a bit of a disappointing day in LPGA Tour school finals.

Still, both Rhode Islanders remain in solid position to earn their big-league tour cards for next year.

Cumberland's Adamonis shot a 68, including going 5-under in his last 11 holes, to jump from a tie for 46th to a tie for 25th in PGA Tour finals at Orange County National outside Orlando. He is 11-under through four rounds of the six-round competition. The top 25 finishers and ties earn PGA Tour cards for next year.

Frank Lickliter continues to lead at 24-under.

Narragansett's Grzebien had a 75 in the LPGA event in Daytona Beach, falling from a tie for eighth into a tie for 22nd through four rounds of that five-round round. The top 17 finishers and ties will earn full LPGA cards. Grzebien is two shots outside that cut line. The next 35 players will become non-exempt players on the LPGA Tour. Grzebien is three shots inside that cut line.

Jane Park, the leader throughout, opened her lead to six strokes, at 14-under. Grzebien's former Duke teammate, Connecticut's Liz Janagelo, is a 4-under, in a tie for 11th, after a fourth-round 73.

DIVISION II FOOTBALL: South Kingstown 25, Toll Gate 13

CRANSTON -- Sean Hamill scored two touchdowns and lineman Michael Rayta had the clincher on a pass interception and return as South Kingstown downed Toll Gate, 25-13, in the Division II Super Bowl today at Cranston Stadium.

Toll Gate dominated the first half and led, 6-0, at the break. The momentum changed completely in the second half. The Rebels took control behind the running of Hamill, Josh Ponte and Tim Hazard and scored 19 straight points.

After Toll Gate closed to 19-13 and got the ball back, Rayta clinched it when he picked off a screen pass and returned it 25 yards for a touchdown.

DIVISION I FOOTBALL: St. Raphael wins state title

EAST PROVIDENCE -- Jordan Monk set up the game-winning touchdown by returning a free kick 73 yards deep into Hendricken territory with five minutes to play in the fourth quarter as St. Raphael, playing without star quarterback Stanley Dunbar, upset the Hawks, 8-6, today at Pierce Field and won the state high school football championship.

Hendricken had a taken a 6-0 lead with 12 seconds to go in the first half on Matt Brown's 90-yard punt return.

St. Raphael was driving for the tying TD in the fourth quarter when the Hawks recovered a Saints fumble on their own 2-yard line. Unable to make a first down, they took an intentional safety, cutting their lead to 6-2, to get the free kick -- with a strong wind at their backs -- from the 20-yard line rather than having to punt from their own end zone.

But Monk returned to the free kick 73 yards to the Hendricken 2. Peter Micali scored the game-winning touchdown from there.
