Phil Bests Tiger
For one of the first times in his pro golf career, Phil Mickelson stared down Tiger Woods and won a big tournament today at the TPC Boston.
Mickelson made seven birdies and shot a final round 66 to post a 16-under score and win the Deutsche Bank Championship. Woods, Arron Oberholser and Brett Wetterich all finished two shots back.
Mickelson was paired with Woods for the third time in four days, a twist of fate that sent plenty of electricity through the sellout crowds of 25,000. Woods struggled with a balky putter early on but birdied the 14th and 16th holes to mount his customary charge. But this time Mickelson answered, draining a birdie at the 16th as well to maintain his lead. Mickelson ended his round with his final bird, walking off with the win.
Afterwards, Mickelson said he's thinking of skipping the third leg of the FedEx Cup playoffs next weekend in Chicago. His children are ready to report to school and he said he's tired after a long stretch of play. Mickelson will play in the Tour Championship event in two weeks in Atlanta.
