Learning FedEx Cup math
Welcome to a beautiful Labor Day at TPC Boston.
We are still two hours away from the beginning of the Tiger and Lefty Show, chapter three, with Brett Wetterich and Arron Oberholser hoping to steal the spotlight. In the meantime, FedEx talk is keeping us busy at the Deutsche Bank Championship.
This new playoff system really is complicated and difficult to understand, for the players and everyone else. But at least it does add interest. Sean O’Hair is the guy causing the early math calculations here.
O’Hair _ he’s the guy who went from the New England Tour to the PGA Tour _ began birdie-birdie today to get to 7-under for the tournament and into a tie for 14th. He currently stands 68th on the FedEx points list and, as we all know by now, only the top 70 will go to Chicago for round three later this week. The calculations built into the computers in the press room tell us if he can stay where he is he will jump to 60th place and be home free.
Steve Flesch, on the other hand, looks all but gone. He is on the bubble in 70th position. He made the cut, but had a 78 today and is in last place at 8-over. That would give him only 75 more points and there are too many guys in position to jump past him. The projections say Flesche will finish 73rd and not be invited to Chicago.
