A golf detour

Here at TPC Boston, Phil Mickelson has surged into the lead in the Deutsche Bank Championship with three birdies in his first five holes.

Out in Kansas, Paul Quigley, the winningest player in R.I. Golf Association history, has just won his first-round match in the U.S. Senior Amateur. Quigley qualified with rounds of 77-71 Saturday and Sunday. Today, he beat Todd Kennedy, who had qualified at 146, by a 5-and-4 margin.

Quigley will meet David Stanfield of Lanett, Ala., in the round of 32 tomorrow. Stanfield, one of the top qualifers at 141, won his first-round match 3 and 2.

Back at TPC Boston, Mickelson has carried the early part of the day with birdies at 2, 4 and 5 to get to 14-under. Arron Oberholser is one behind, Brett Wetterich and the surging Steve Stricker two back and Tiger Woods three behind.

The big swing for Woods and Mickelson, who are playing together, came on the short par-4 fourth. Woods drove the green but three putted for par. Mickelson drove into the front left bunker but got up and down for birdie.

Stricker, the winner last week and FedEx Cup leader, is 4-under through eight to surge into contention.
