Golf’s big three is in the middle of putting on a show today in the first round of the Deutsche Bank Championship, just not the kind of show most expected.

Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Vijay Singh, playing in the same threesome for the first time ever in the opening round of a tour event, have the huge crowd following them at the TPC of Boston buzzing. A few times, it has been because of a great shot. More often, though, it has been because of uncharacteristically terrible play.

The group just finished the front nine and, on a day in which the scoring average 70.4, just under par (which is 71), Woods, Singh and Mickelson are a combined 5-over. Mickelson is even, six behind leaders Ryan Moore and Mike Weir. Woods is 1-over and Singh 4-over.

It is the way they have done it that has made it a wild show. The world’s greatest players have three double bogeys and a triple bogey. If they were a team and could match cards, their best score would be a 31. Mickelson eagled the fourth hole when he canned a bunker shot. The group also would have three birdies on its best-of scorecard.

It is using their worst score makes the show so unusual. Their worst card looks like a total posted from the Joe’s Bar and Grill Twilight League at Triggs _ it’s a 47!!!

It includes a double bogey six by Singh on the first, a double bogey seven by Woods on the second, a double bogey six by Singh on 6 and finally a triple bogey seven by Mickeslon on the ninth.

The three have been in the water, in the woods and in numerous bunkers. They certainly have not looked like the world’s best.

Oh yes, K.J. Choi, currently second in the FedEx Cup playoff race standings, has withdrawn after shooting a 73. He cited back pain.
