Tiger off to terrible start

Tiger Woods has quickly dug himself a big hole in the Deutsche Bank Championship. Four holes into his day, he is nine shots off the lead and six behind playing partner Phil Mickeslon.

Woods, the defending champion and world No. 1, bogeyed his second hole today, the 554-yard, par-5. He had problems because his second shot came up inches short and bounced off the rock into the hazard that fronts the green.

Mickelson had just hit an excellent second shot onto the green. He would go on to birdie the hole. Woods, hitting second from the right rough, hit an iron that was on a good line toward the pin. But the ball hit a large rock that is part of the protective area on the edge of the hazard.

It ricocheted high into the air, but also backwards into the hazard. Woods took a drop behind the hazard, hit his fourth on the green about 40 feet left of the hole and two-putted for bogey.

Moments ago, it got even worse for Woods. He and Mickelson both drove into the left front bunker on the course’s new, short (298 yards) par-4 4th. Both were only about 35 feet from the cup.

Mickelson holed his shot an eagle. Woods then left his in the bunker, got out in three and three-putted for a double bogey.

Thus, after four holes, Mickelson is 3-under, Woods 3-over. Singh is 1-over. Mike Weir and Ryan Moore, both of whom have finished for the day, are tied for the lead at 6-under.

Barrington's Brett Quigley, in the last group off the tee, just bogeyed his first hole.

The stat of the day: Bubba Watson averaged 316 yards with his drives today. He finished at 7-over 78 and is currently in last place.
