Rhode Island Surf Championships

After cancelling three straight contests in the past two months, ESA officials were wary on the night before last week’s scheduled event. The original site of the contest was Whitecrest Beach in Cape Cod, which was not a viable choice, due to the fact that the sandbar shifts had caused the waves to be unridable throughout most of the tides.
With the town beach having been very ridable for the three days before the contest, everyone figured it would just go flat, as it had happened for the past three events. “We were very surprised to see a solid 3-4 foot ground swell on Saturday morning,” said ESA Competition Director Mario Frade. “And the waves stayed strong right through the entire day of competition. We really lucked out.”
“There were lots of nice, well formed waves coming in,” said local rider Ryan Richer. “But the sets would shift from one sand bar to another. I sat through most of my short board heat without a set coming through, although the other peak kept pumping 3-4 footers.”
“No doubt,” said double winner Chuck Barend. “You had to keep hustling to make sure you grabbed the set waves, because the peaks were shifting.”
With the quality waves, came many hot performances in just about every possible category. Scituate’s Chad Bruce continued to remain undefeated in the Menehune competition, while the Madden brothers from Portsmouth took the top spots in the Boys and Junior Men’s finals.
Cape Cod’s Eric Dranginis topped Narragansett’s Ryan Richer in the shortboard Men’s Final, while Richer returned the compliment in the Men’s Longboard stanza. North Kingstown’s Joe Black returned to the competition scene after 15 years, and showed he had not lost his winning form, as he topped Nick Carter in the Masters Final.
In the older categories, it was Little Compton’s Chuck Barend sweeping both the Senior Men’s and Senior Longboard Finals, with some great wave selection. Narragansett’s Peter Pan did likewise in taking both the Legends and Legends Longboard titles.
Pembroke’s Nora Vasconcellos moved up to the Junior Women’s and Women’s Longboard ranks for the first time, and styled her way to easy wins in both.
Boston’s Pat Redmond continued to remain undefeated in the Open Bodyboard category, while Little Compton’s Pat Brown took the highly competitive Open Shortboard title.
The next ESA contest is again scheduled for the Narragansett Town Beach on July 28th. The event will be on call for the night before, after 6:00 PM.
Interested surfers can call the ESA hotline at 401.727.2605 at that time.
