Mike Tamburro named to search committee for new minor league president
The Board of Trustees of Minor League Baseball announced recently that it has established a Search Committee from its membership to screen candidates for nomination for the Presidency of Minor League Baseball. Mike Moore, who has been President since 1992, announced recently that he is retiring at the end of his current term, which expires December 31, 2007.
Mike Tamburro, President of the Pawtucket Red Sox, was selected by the Search Committee as its Chair. The other members of the Committee are Frank Burke (Chattanooga Lookouts), Alan Stein (Lexington Legends) and Bob Beban (Eugene Emeralds).
The new president will be elected to a four-year term, beginning January 1, 2008 and ending December 31, 2011. The election will take place at this year’s Baseball Winter Meetings, December 3-6 in Nashville.
The National Association Agreement, the corporate charter that governs Minor League Baseball, outlines a process for the Board of Trustees to nominate a candidate for election, based on recommendations by a search committee.
“Our job is to present the Board of Trustees with the names of the best available candidates,” said Tamburro. “Our goal is to have a list of candidates for presentation to the full Board prior to September 1,” Tamburro added.
The September 1 date is important because, under the National Association Agreement, the names of candidates selected by the Search Committee must be submitted to the Board of Trustees at least 90 days prior to the Winter Meetings. At a Board of Trustees meeting in late September, the Board will attempt to narrow the Search Committee’s list of candidates down to a single nominee. The nomination and election process also permits individual leagues to nominate candidates shortly before the commencement of the Winter Meetings.
Minor League Baseball was founded in 1901 as the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues and has served as the governing body for the industry since that time. In its 107 year history, Minor League Baseball has had only ten presidents. Under the National Association Agreement, the President serves as Minor League Baseball’s Chief Executive Officer charged with authority and responsibility to administer the National Association Agreement and the policies adopted by the Board of Trustees.
