Keeling, Flowers named Gatorade track standouts
Ponaganset's Jake Keeling and Classical's Victoria Flowers have been named Gatorade Rhode Island State Track & Field Athletes of the Year.
The award recognizes individuals' outstanding athletics performances, high academic achievements and exemplary personal character on and off the track.
Keeling, a senior, won the javelin and shot put events in the State Meet. He threw a personal best 206 feet, 8 inches in the javelin. He also won the shot by better than a three-foot margin with a throw of 52-.5. Keeling also maintained a 3.40 GPA.
"He's a gentle giant," said Ponaganset head coach Tom Marcello. "He's physically imposing when you see him, but he has a heart of gold. He will do anything you ask of him. He's really a kind soul. Even better for us, he didn't lose one meet."
Flowers, a junior, owns the No. 4 prep hammer throw in the country with a throw of 171 feet, 2 inches. She set a pair of records in the hammer throw and shot put at State Meet. In the classroom, Flowers maintained a 3.11 GPA.
