Keene State Tops No. 1 Wheaton
HARWICH, Mass. – Keene State enjoyed a four-run fifth inning, which lifted the Owls over No. 1 seeded Wheaton by a score of 6-3 in the 2007 NCAA New England Regional Baseball Championships.
With the win, the Owls advance to meet Eastern Connecticut State, 6-3 winners over Western New England in Game Five, in a contest scheduled for 12:00 p.m. on Friday, May 18.
Jeff Perkins (Dunbarton, N.H.) reached base after being hit by a pitch to start things off in the fifth. After stealing second and moving to third on an error, he was driven home by a Ryan Jones (Nashua, N.H.) single. Jones stole second and crossed the plate on a John Grainger (Keene, N.H.) single to right. Grainger later scored on an RBI walk. Greg Ford (Nashua, N.H.) wrapped up the scoring, reaching base on a single and scoring on Buck Merrill’s (Colchester, Conn.) RBI single.
Wheaton rallied for a pair of runs in the seventh inning thanks to Adam Laplante’s (Harwich, Mass.) two-run double to left. The Lyons would get no closer, leaving the bases loaded in the seventh and mustering only one hit in the final two frames.
Laplante finished the day going 2-for-4 with the two RBI’s. Louie Bernardini (Gray, Maine) took his first loss of the season (7-1).
Keene State was led by Jones, Ford and Grainger who each went 2-for-4 with two RBI’s. Phil Mabey (Williamstown, Mass.) took the win moving him to 4-1 on the year, while Mike Cook (Dover, Mass.) earned his first save.
