Revs play to tie with Crew
Taylor Twellman added to his record as the leading scorer in New England Revolution history in a 2-2 tie with the Columbus Crew on Thursday night.
Twellman scored in the 38th minute after bringing the ball into Crew territory from the halfway line and lacing a low, 30-yard shot that beat goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum.
It was Twellman's third goal in five days. He scored twice in New England's 4-0 win over Toronto FC last Saturday and has 78 goals in six seasons for the Revolution.
The Revs are 1-1-1 on the year. The Crew have tied all three games.
Second-half substitute Kei Kamara saved the Crew from a loss when he got to a pass from Frankie Hejduk and shot into the top of the net from 10 yards in the 86th minute.
Ned Grabavoy scored the Crew's first goal of the season in the eighth minute, pouncing on a drop pass from Columbus forward Ricardo Virtuoso and firing a shot off the hand of New England midfielder Shalrie Joseph and into the net.
New England midfielder Andy Dorman answered two minutes later. He kept control of the ball after beating a defender at the penalty spot and slipped a precise shot past Gruenebaum.
Gruenebaum kept Twellman from picking up a second goal when he smothered Twellman's close-range shot in the 75th minute.
The teams combined for 17 shots in a raucous first half that ended with a scuffle outside the New England penalty area.
The bad blood apparently resulted from Crew forward Andy Herron elbowing Jay Heaps in the face during a free kick moments earlier. Herron and Heaps had exchanged words earlier in the half.
Referee Ricardo Salazar conferred with assistant referee George Vergara after the fracas, but decided against issuing any cards.
Salazar booked Heaps in the 42nd minute when Heaps hauled down Herron to prevent a possible breakaway, and showed a yellow card to New England midfielder Jeff Larentowicz for a hard tackle in the 76th minute.
Hejduk picked up a yellow card in the 82nd minute.
