Providence's Matt Godfrey earns TKO in second round
With less than a minute to go in the second round, Providence’s Matt Godfrey landed a left hook to the head of Felix Cora that put him on the canvas. After taking a 10-count Cora came back and tried to outlast the bell but Godfrey bore down and attacked the hurt fighter and landed several unanswered punches, forcing the referee to stop the fight at 2:45 of the second round. Godfrey is now 15-0 in his professional career with 9 knockouts.
At the outset of the fight, the normally orthodox stance fighting Godfrey came out and fought southpaw style. Both fighters took it slowly in the first round with Godfrey making a deliberate attempt to go to the body of the smaller Cora. It was evident after the round that Godfrey was the one pressing the action.
After the fight, the winner noted how he’d always given left-handers trouble and since he never had a problem throwing power punches with his left hand he decided to go southpaw. Once he had Cora staggered though, Godfrey quickly switched back to an orthodox stance and pummeled Cora into submission. This was the fifth time in his pro career that Godfrey ended a fight before the end of the fourth round. Godfrey retained his NABA title and took over the vacant NABF Cruiserweight crown.
