P-Bruins win season finale, open playoffs on Wednesday
Rookie Jason Platt scored his first goal of the season at 2:47 of overtime to give the Providence Bruins a 1-0 victory over the Manchester Monarchs in the final regular-season game of the AHL season for both teams on Sunday.
The victory enabled Providence (43-30-2-4) to clinch third place in the Atlantic Division with 94 points, one more than fourth-place Worcester who beat Lowell, 3-2, in overtime Sunday.
Providence will play second-place Hartford in the first round of the Calder Cup playoffs.
Games 1 and 2 will be played at Hartford on Wednesday and Friday respectively. Both games start at 7 p.m. The Bruins will host Games 3 and 4 of the best-of-seven series on Saturday and Tuesday, April 24.
During Sunday's game, Platt — who played for Providence College — crossed in front of the net and slipped a pass from Marco Rosa past Yutaka Fukufuji (29 saves) for his first goals in four games with the Bruins.
Jordan Sigalet made 23 saves for his third shutout of the season.
