Patriots match Broncos offer to Sauerbrun
The Patriots matched the one-year, $1.4 million contract offer Denver Broncos had made to punter Todd Sauerbrun.
Though as a 12-year veteran Sauerbrun was eligible to become an unrestricted free agent, he gave the Patriots the right of first refusal when he signed with club late last season. Denver, where the 34-year old Sauerbrun had spent the 2005 season, made its offer last week, and New England decided to match within seven days.
Sauerbrun, cut by the Broncos after testing positive for the banned substance Ephedra and suspended for the first four games last season, was the Pats’ punter for the final five games of the season, including playoffs. He averaged 43.7 yards per punt.
