Jim Donaldson at the Masters: Quigley's front nine
AUGUSTA, Ga. _ It was a roller-coaster ride on the front nine this morning for Brett Quigley, who made just three pars.
Although he had two birdies, he also had three bogeys and a double-bogey, putting him at 3-over 39 at the turn and leaving him 7-over for the tournament following his opening-round 76 yesterday.
As he did yesterday, Quigley opened with a bogey after pushing his drive on the difficult, 455-yard, par-4 to the right. On the green in three, his bid for a par-saving putt lipped out from about 10 feet.
Quigley got that stroke right back with a birdie at the par-5 second, but his tee shot on the 240-yard, par-3, fourth hole landed in the front-right bunker and, after escaping the sand, he needed three putts to get his ball into the hole.
After a pair of pars, Quigley again had bunker problems at the 450-yard, par-4 7th, where he was unable to make a sand save and wound up with a bogey.
A birdie at the par-5 eighth hole helped, but he followed that with a bogey at the 460-yard, par-4 ninth, where he was hurt by a poor chip after missing the green just slightly to the right with his approach.
