Jim Donaldson at the Masters: Highest scores ever
AUGUSTA, Ga. _ In case you're wondering, with Stuart Appleby the only player under par as the third round of The Masters winds down this afternoon, what the highest winning score in tournament history has been _ it's 289, 1-over.
In 1956, Jack Burke was one of only two players to break par in the final round, carding a 71 to come from eight shots behind and nip Ken Venturi, then still an amateur, with a 72-hole total of 289.
That was the same score Sam Snead and Ben Hogan had shot two years earlier. In an 18-hole playoff for the title, Snead won by shooting 70 to Hogan's 71.
The only other time the winner at The Masters didn't break par was in 1966, when Jack Nicklaus won a playoff against Tommy Jacobs and Gay Brewer after they finished tied through 72 holes at even-par 288.
