Jim Donaldson at the Masters: Fall weather
AUGUSTA, Ga. _ It's a beautiful autumn day here in Augusta, one better suited to the Georgia Bulldogs teeing it up against Alabama's Crimson Tide ``between the hedges'' at Sanford Stadium, just down the road in Athens, than Vijay Singh and Tiger Woods teeing it up at Augusta National in hopes of catching the likes Brett Wetterich, Tim Clark, Vaughn Taylor and winning another green jacket.
Temperatures aren't expected to get even into the 60s. And neither will many scores, with the wind-whipped greens playing hard and fast.
Padraig Harrington and Paul Casey tied for low round yesterday with 68s. Jerry Kelly, who shot 69, was the only other player to break 70. Clark, who's tied for the lead with Wetterich, has back-to-back 71s for a total of 142. Wetterich shot a 1-over 73 yesterday after opening with a 69 on Thursday.
``You've really got to pay attention and think about what you're doing here,'' Wetterich said yesterday in his post-round interview, ``because every shot could cost you double-bogey. Other places, the penalties are not going to be as severe as out here.''
Woods, who shockingly dumped balls into the water on both the par-3 12th and par-5 13th yesterday on his way to a 74 that left him five shots off the lead, expects a difficult weekend.
``The conditions coming up, I mean, we're going to all have to grind. Normally, it rains here, and we've got softer conditions, so you can make a couple of birdies. Right now, birdies are very hard to come by. Whether you're a rookie or a vet, you're going to have your hands full this weekend.''
