URI basketball falls to Richmond
Brian Morris scored 7 points in the final 1:13 Saturday night and Richmond made 15 3-pointers and then held on to beat Rhode Island 71-69 and earn a spot in the Atlantic 10 Conference tournament.
The Spiders (8-21, 4-12) led by as many as 11 in the second half and by 64-54 with 3:58 remaining before Jimmy Baron scored six points in an 8-0 run for the Rams, pulling them to 64-62 with 1:37 left. Baron capped with rally with a four-point play.
Morris then answered with a 3-pointer and followed two free throws by Will Daniels with a pair of his own from the line with 34 seconds left. After Baron's jumper with 25 seconds to go, Morris hit two more from the line with 14.3 seconds to play.
Rhode Island (17-13, 10-6) lost its third straight. The Rams used a 20-4 run in the first half to open a big lead, but Richmond scored 15 in a row in a half-ending 18-2 burst and led 33-27 at the intermission.
Baron had 21, Daniels 17 and Kahiem Seawright 16 for the Rams.
