Sports Tonight: Downey's back
Not quite yet, actually. In fact, he probably won't be able to get here on time for tomorrow's game against Worcester.
But the most popular player in Providence Bruins history is back in the black-and-gold. Joe McDonald broke the news on this very blog this afternoon, and he'll have another story in tomorrow's Providence Journal and on projo.com.
He'll also have a game story and notebook from tonight's Boston Bruins-Philadelphia Flyers game. Check the blog later tonight for results.
Also on the blog tonight: Results from local college basketball playoff games, specifically the Bryant men and CCRI women.
There'll be no high school playoff results, because there are no high school playoff games. But Robert Lee will have a preview of the boys basketball playoffs in tomorrow's Journal and on projo.com, and Carolyn Thornton will preview the girls. John Gillooly will have his weekly hockey column.
Tomorrow may be a first in Providence Journal history: Two -- count 'em, two! -- staff-written sports stories on the front cover. Sean McAdam looks at Matsuzaka mania in advance of Dice-K's Red Sox debut, and Carolyn Thornton tells the emotional tale of the Mt. Hope girls basketball team participating in a playoff game only days after the death of team member Kayleigh Raposa in a weekend car accident. You'll be able to find both stories on projo.com's sports pages, however.
Also tomorrow in the Journal and on projo.com:
-- A Red Sox notebook from Steven Krasner.
-- A look at how the URI basketball team will fare in the postseason awards races, from Paul Kenyon.
-- Mike Szostak's weekly college hockey column.
-- A column on the Rhode Island College basketball team, which plays UMass-Dartmouth in the Little East semifinals tomorrow night, by Jim Donaldson.
