Bryant wins tournament opener (updated)
Orlando Baeza scored 25 points, Jon Ezeokoli added 23 and Chris Burns 20 as Bryant overcame a three-point halftime deficit by outscoring Adelphi 44-19 in the second half and romped to a 77-55 win in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II Northeast Regional tournament Saturday afternoon at Bentley College.
''We did a terrific job of taking care of the ball in the second half and made our free throws down the stretch,'' said coach Max Good. ''I thought we rebounded fairly well against a zone and with our post players accumulating fouls, we were able to get solid contributions from our bench players . . . Orlando (Baeza) does a good job of drawing fouls and Orlando was able to give us a boost offensively.”
“There were so many holes opening up for me with Chris (Burns) and Jon (Ezeokoli) drawing so much attention by their defense,'' said Baeza. ''The pressure was off me and I just tried to contribute. We just got great minutes and production today from everyone.”
The Bulldogs will play the winner of today's Saint Rose-Pace game on Sunday at 5 p.m. If they win, they will play in the Northeast Regional championship game Tuesday night. A victory there would advance them to the Elite Eight in Springfield, Mass., on March 21.
