No photosynthesis, though: Introducing the Solar Tree
The streets of Europe could soon be lit by solar energy due to the fact that a solar tree prototype recently passed a key test phase.
The solar trees went on display for four weeks in October on a busy street — the Ringstrasse — in Vienna, Austria. They were able to provide enough light during the night-time even when the sun did not show for as much as four days in a row.

Change is hard: The Edge Annual Question — 2008: "What have you changed your mind about? Why?" The answers, from scientists and (heavily West Coast) thinkers, aren't as interesting as they might have been had they asked a wider range of people. No politicians, for instance, and most of the women asked seem to be psychologists.
Resolutions on hold: Astrologers tell us Mars is retrograde. You can quit things -- nailbiting, smoking, white foods -- but shouldn't try to start anything. Think about it till the end of the month.
