Female Muslim comic; lions x tigers=ligers; Edith Wharton's gardens

shazia8s.jpgShazia Mirza, born in Pakistan, is wowing Britain. Check out these lines from the Independent's coverage (The stand-up revolution) of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival which runs through Aug. 29:

"My name is Shazia Mirza. At least, that's what it says on my pilot's license."
"I always wanted to be like my white friends, who had abortions, herpes and chlamydia. And my mother would say, 'Wait until you are married, your husband will give you all of that.'"
"If men are the ones with no self-control, why do we have to be covered head to toe? Surely it's them who should be covered up - or, better yet, chained."
"I'm terrified I'll die a virgin. Not because I'm obsessed with sex. I'm not, I don't think it's that big a deal. But I don't want to get to Paradise and have to sleep with one of the suicide bombers."

Lions x tigers=ligers: At National Geographic News,

It's half lion, half tiger, and completely real. Now thanks to a cameo in the 2004 cult movie Napoleon Dynamite, the liger has leaped into the limelight, prompting fans to ask, What are they really like?

The faintly striped, shaggy-maned creatures are the offspring of male lions and female tigers, which gives them the ability to both roar like lions and chuff like tigers—a supposedly affectionate sound that falls somewhere between a purr and a raspberry....

Click the photo for more shots of Patrick, who was adopted when a roadside zoo in Illinois was shut down. These are hefty captions. I learned on one that,

A male lion was mated with a female tiger. (When a female lion is mated with a male tiger, the result is a tiglon, or tigon.)

New garden blog: Judith of Knitagarden writes,

My garden is my daily inspiration, no matter the time of year or season. I garden in the woods in Massachusetts and garden on an island (in Narragansett Bay). I twine yarn and crochet along with my garden blogging as well as beekeeping, my smooth collies and Maine Coon Cats. I enjoy visiting gardens--public gardens & friends' gardens and like giving blog reports on what I see in my travels.

I'm a bit late blogging this addition, but timing is everything: Her latest post is about a field trip to Edith Wharton's estate and gardens in Lenox, Mass., with photos.

Bonus: Judith links to What's That Bug?, a question I ask every day in the wildlife sanctuary of my backyard.

I've added Judith's Knitagarden to the ever-expanding Garden Blogs list.

Great! I totally agree with that!!! Sometimes muslim women surprise me. That's great that some of them realize the value of liberty.
