Email from a longtime reader:
Sheila,
Happy Birthday!! And many more!!
As I've mentioned before, my birthday is the 4th. That makes you 1 day older... and wiser (we won't worry about years).
My best memories of the 3rd from when much younger are of the whole family gathering at a relative's house at Gaspee point, when it was private. You needed a secret password (I'm sure the name of the people you were visiting) to get into my party!! We'd spend the night and then celebrate the 4th (and my birthday although I thought when younger that it was just my birthday).
Oh but the night of the third! Bonfires on the shore probably every quarter mile or less. Earlier in the week everyone would gather the wood and debris along the shore to use for the fire so it actually was a community clean-up, just not very green from today's perspective.
Fireworks across the bay first at Crescent Park to the left and then look right to see the Rocky Point display. Walk along the beach (watch out for the horseshoe crabs!!). And how many salutes did my oldest cousin have go off in his hand? Sparklers and punks for the younger folks.
Do you remember punks? A narrow stick you could hold in your mouth like you were smoking with something covering the end (cork?) which when lit would just smolder and glow. You'd use it when older to light the salutes wicks.
Now, most of that is not very PC and probably illegal, but ... those were the days!!
Keep on blogging!!

Happy birthday to you, too, Bill, and to Uncle Sam, who's 232 today.
Quebec and I were born yesterday.

Quebec turned 400 yesterday with fireworks from a barge on the St. Lawrence River.
