This year's Breakers Marathon, slated for Oct. 20, will feature a new sponsor, new prize money and a new beneficiary. Race organizer Danny Gough provides more details: NEWPORT, RI—Amica Insurance, one of Rhode Island’s largest employers, has signed on as the title sponsor of the Breakers Marathon 2007, the state’s only marathon. The event, planned for October 20, 2007, features a course along the coastline and rural roads of Middletown and Newport, known as one of the state’s most scenic areas. The mission of the Amica Insurance Breakers Marathon 2007 is two-fold: to bring a world-class marathon race event back to Rhode Island and to raise money for the Ronald McDonald House in Providence. Amica Insurance chose to sponsor the Breakers Marathon because of its commitment to being a good corporate neighbor in its home state of Rhode Island and to help celebrate its 100th anniversary. The appeal of the marathon extends far beyond Rhode Island. In 2006, runners from 42 different states registered for the Breakers Marathon. Now in its fourth year, it has quickly grown to become a favorite among local runners and visitors alike. With strong community support, first-class race organization, and a beautiful course, this family event continues to grow in popularity. This year’s race also features a combined prize package of $5,000 for top male and female finishers in various marathon categories. Prize money for top finishers, including the first-place male and female Rhode Island resident, will be supplemented by local artisan hand-blown glass trophies and merchandise for top age-group finishers.
