The Sweeney family of Narragansett and the Narragansett Lions Club are teaming up to hold the ninth annual Get To The Point Memorial Run/Walk, tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Salty Brine Beach in Galilee.

Here, the Sweeney's talk about why the race was first established and how it has evolved:

``The Get To The Point Memorial Run/Walk has come a long way since the first race in October 1998. It is not only a running/walking experience but a chance to see a whole community of people coming together and truly GETTING THE POINT.

THE “original” POINT, as many know, was to honor two of our family members, Robert E. Sweeney Jr. and Maureen J. Sweeney. Bob, a commercial fishing boat captain passed away from a massive blood clot, and Maureen, a mother of two, died from colon cancer.

The event was a chance to turn these two tragic situations around and at the same time do some good for the community.

Each year we are amazed how the race develops, last year raised close to $35,000.00. Money was awarded to The Fishermen Memorial Fund and also the Narragansett Lion’s Club; assisting in their cause of placing Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) in the community.''
