The suspense is over. U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy has taken the podium in person on the opening night of the Democratic National Convention. The ailing icon of the Kennedy political family, who recently underwent brain surgery, said, "As I look ahead, I am strengthened by family and friendship." While his white mane of hair was tamed a bit, the Massachussets Democrat stood straight, as he said forcefully: "I pledge to you that I will be there next January on the floor of the U.S. Senate," his voice breaking only at the end. The reaction: Cheers and whistles and applause, prompting the senator to chuckle and say thank you. As he wrapped up his speech, calling in particular for health-care reform, the music began to play: "You're still the one."
