The governor of the smallest state has weighed in on the choice of the governor of the largest state as the running mate for Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain.

In a brief statement his afternoon, Governor Carcieri congratulated Gov. Sarah Palin, whom he described as "an excellent choice."

He said that he and his wife "have had the pleasure and honor to get to know Governor Palin and her family over the past few years, most recently at the National Governors Association 100th annual meeting in Philadelphia.

"She is bright, articulate and a real rising star in the Republican Party. It's great to see young women, like Governor Palin, rising through the Republican Party. As a wife, a mother, and a leader, she is a great role model for all young women in America," Carcieri said.

See Palin's bio on the National Governors Association Web site (her official bio on her own governor's site has been unreachable since McCain's announcement of her selection today).

Video: Carcieri shares the stage with Palin, and several other governors, during a Feb. 25 news conference at the National Governors Association winter meeting this year -- which includes some chatter about who vice presidential choices might be. The appearances occur late in the total 18 min., 36 secs. clip.

Boy, if Don is endorsing her she must be ready for a fall. It is like the kiss of death. So much for Mccain's challenges to Obama's lack of experience to lead. At McCain's age, she would be only a heartbeat away from running the country. I'd take Biden any day!

Carcieri would have been a better choice - or even Bruce Sundlun for that matter.

McCrazy only tapped Palin because of her gender - that is clear as crystal.

He is trying to get the former Hillary supporters and that is going to blow up in his face.

The woman has enough baggage for a round-the-world cruise. Per-capita, Alaska is just as corrupt as RI...

The choice is clear Obama/Biden...

First, I notice some derision of your Governor on this blog. In the opinion of most people I meet in Rhode Island, he is best Governor in decades. He makes the right decisions (i.e. the recent veto of the energy pork barrel he vetoed - you have to be in the energy business to understand how your legislature once again tried to screw the public) and knows how to control the profligate spending due to the NEA and other unions. Wow...kudos to him on the illegal migrant issue! Your state is quickly becoming a national disgrace. He maybe the only honest and level headed politician left in RI.

Second, on the VP slot, Biden is a Washington beltway joke from the first day he entered the senate. His plagiarizing of the Neil Kinnock speech is testament to dishonesty. His idea to partition Iraq is testament to his poor judgment. His performance on the Senate ASC is testament to his lack of basic intelligence.

Third, on McCain's choice of Governor Palin, well, it is about time we had a Western politican as VP instead of morally challenged east coast ivy educated lawyer. And, frankly, aside from a terrific record on energy and environment, she manages with credibility on fiscal restraint and is an example of moral values.

Sarah Palin is an excellent choice for McCain to have as his VP. I am not a McCain fan, but having someone on the ticket who is more qualified to be President than the democrat choice is a plus in my book! Great move!!

Yes, Marilyn, my Governor is a good man, and a great Governor. His policies are the only life boat in this democrat-ruled state. If it were not for him, we'd be a nanny state with the illegals and union hacks in the driver's seat!
