Brown University names new public affairs chief

Marisa Quinn has been appointed vice president of public affairs and university relations at Brown University.

Quinn, of Jamestown, was an aide to former U.S. Sen. Claiborne Pell and former New Jersey governor James Florio. Quinn also served as chief spokeswoman for the Rhode Island Departmnent of Elementary and Secondary Education.

In her new job, Quinn will oversee university communications and 35 Brown employees. She will also be in charge of the Brown Alumni Magazine and managing university relationships with city, state and federal elected officials.

A Rhode Island native, Quinn has worked in public affairs at Brown since 1999. She was educated at the University of Rhode Island and at Rutgers University, where she earned a master's degree from the Eagleton Institute of Politics.

"It would be difficult to imagine anyone better suited by education, knowledge, temperment and direct experience to the role of vice president for public affairs and university relations,'' said Brown President Ruth J. Simmons.

Quinn assumes her new duties on Aug. 1. She takes over from Michael Chapman, who is leaving Brown to pursue other careeer opportunities.
