Against its own lawyer's advice, the State Board of Elections voted today that the five Republican candidates appointed to General Assembly races by state GOP chairman Giovanni Cicione were not valid because the names had been filed with the Secretary of State instead of being submitted to their boards of canvassers. Board lawyer Raymond Marcaccio had recommended that the candidates be allowed to run and to pick up their nominating papers on grounds that the relevant statute does not specify where Cicione should have filed their names. And, Marcaccio said, weighing that ambiguity against their First Amendment rights, the Board should err on the side of First Amendment rights; letting the candidates run. But his proposal was rejected on a 2 to 2 vote. (A tie vote is considered a defeat.) The board then voted unanimously against the GOP's appeal of the Secretary of State's refusal to issue the candidates nominating papers. Afterward, an upset Cicione said the Board's refusal to take its own lawyer's advice showed the system was rigged by the Democrats against Republicans. -- Katherine Gregg, Journal State House Bureau CommentsLeave a comment |

This is yet another example of where stupidity can lead you. To think that after all these years of dealing with the RI political scene, politician wanabees would know, or at least investigate, the procedures for filing papers. Of course, I feel that the Board should have allowed the candidates to proceed, but to not to expect this type of behavior from the Rhode Island political machine and act surprised when such decisions result is laughable.
As more and more dumbed-down candidates attempt to run for office, we will see variations of these decisions to keep Republicans from political office.

This is another example of a system or society contemplating "rewarding ignorance"! When you have a Republican State Party Chairman, an attorney also who deals in election laws and the political process, and doesn't know the correct procedure to file the proper papers to run for a state-wide office and gets it wrong.......now he wants the State Elections Board to rewards his ignorance and blame the "system" on Democratic controled politics....."GIVE ME A BREAK!!!!"
We try to teach our young to do the right thing and follow the proper procedures. Maybe the Republic State Chairman should go back to school and learns the laws before he critizes!

Unfortunately, the stupidity of Rhode Island lawyers/politicians don't just belong to the republicans. Look at our beautiful state - after decades of DEMOCRAT senators and congressman corruption is the only job people are not voting to cut. While we the people are "kept busy" with the politicians procedure of filing paperwork - the same politician/lawyers that are crying "foul" are stealing your homes and bank accounts!
