Local Obama supporters watching primary outcomes tonight at Local 121

With the Democratic primary season wrapping up today with contests in South Dakota and Montana, Rhode Island supporters of Barack Obama will gather in Providence tonight to see what happens.

According to the Rhode Island Web site for the Obama campaign, it is the last primary party, slated for 7:30 p.m. at Local 121 at 121 Washington St.

There is no formal gathering planned tonight for local supporters of Obama's primary opponent, New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, according to Christine Heenan, communications director for Clinton's Rhode Island campaign.

Obama holds the delegate lead coming into today, and the Associated Press is reporting that Obama has sealed the Democratic presidential nomination as of this evening, a historic step toward his once-improbable goal of becoming the nation's first black president. Clinton, the AP reports, is maneuvering for the vice presidential spot on his fall ticket.

Clinton won the Rhode Island primary in March.
