PROVIDENCE -- U.S. Sen. Jack Reed isn't giving a timetable on when he'll endorse a Democratic candidate for president, even as the final nominating contests loom. The Rhode Island Democrat said Monday during an appearance in Providence that he's looking carefully to see what happens in Tuesday's primaries in South Dakota and Montana, where front-runner Sen. Barack Obama is favored over Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton. Reed says the most important thing is for there to be a Democratic president elected in November, and that means pulling the party together when the nominee is chosen. Fellow Rhode Island Democrat Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, a Clinton supporter, agrees it will be important for Democrats to come together around a candidate soon. He hopes a candidate will be chosen by Independence Day. |
