Sen. Barack Obama may be in Unity, N.H., today cultivating party harmony, but earlier this week he was in Florida to push for another kind of togetherness. Obama traveled to Miami to address the annual meeting of the U.S. Conference of Mayors and the National Conference of Democratic Mayors, which Providence Mayor David N. Cicilline leads. While there, Obama met personally with Cicilline, a Hillary Clinton supporter, as well as the mayors of several other major cities -- including Los Angeles, Chicago and Miami -- who also supported Clinton during primary season. “He said he needed the help of American mayors to help him get elected and we assured him that we too need his help,” Cicilline said of the meeting. The group discussed at length Obama’s urban agenda, which according to Cicilline focuses on revitalizing cities across the country by creatig jobs and improving public safety and schools. “The thing he said that resonated with me is that cities are not the problem, cities are the solution,” Cicilline said. “We are the economic engines and Senator Obama really reinforced that idea.” The senator’s thoughts were persuasive enough to convince the Clinton supporters, the Providence mayor included, to endorse him at a press conference that Cicilline organized later that day. While he is not aware if the Obama camp has any plans to visit Providence before November’s election, Cicilline said he pledged to do whatever he can to help the Senator’s campaign. -- Cynthia Needham, Journal State House Bureau CommentsLeave a comment |
