Rep. Kennedy, Chafee recall Russert

A past and a present member of Rhode Island's congressional delegation offered recollections about Tim Russert, the moderator of NBC's longtime Sunday morning political program "Meet the Press," who died today at age 58.

"The country has lost a dear friend," U.S. Rep. Patrick Kennedy said in a statement.

"We, the viewers, were always the beneficiaries of his analytical thinking, his tireless passion for dissecting the political news of the day and his true commitment to journalism," Kennedy, D-Rhode Island, said. "As a politician, you knew when you appeared on 'Meet the Press' you had made it to the big time and that was all because of Tim.”

Former U.S. Sen. Lincoln D. Chafee said in a statement: "So many Americans take time out on their valuable Sunday mornings to tune in to 'Meet the Press' with Tim Russert. Having been a guest on his show, I can attest to his personal charm and cheerful friendliness, while at the same time, I respected his sharp inquiries as a journalist. He will be missed."

Russert died while preparing for his weekly broadcast, the Associated Press reported.
