A labor union president who made headlines criticizing the Carcieri administration earlier in the year has resigned from the post. Thomas J. Fitzpatrick, then president of Local 314, which represents workers at the state Training School for Youth, told The Providence Journal in March that the governor’s plan to divert troubled youth to “temporary community placements” in lieu of the juvenile prison would “endanger the public.” Further, top officials at the Department of Children, Youth and Families suspected that Fitzpatrick leaked confidential information about escaped juveniles to The Journal. The governor’s office told Political Scene that Fitzpatrick has not been disciplined. And labor union officials refused to link Fitzpatrick’s comments on the Training School to his decision to step down as union president. “It is with heavy heart that I am announcing my resignation as president of Local 314,” Fitzpatrick said in a letter to his members late last month, noting that he had served in that role for more than six years. “Those years have not occurred without an impact on my family.” He continued: “The timing for my resignation is optimal. Local 314’s current executive board is rich with experience.” -- CommentsLeave a comment |

DCYF makes a small mint for the state by taking kids out of their natural homes and placing them into 'group homes'. They are able to get a truckload of money from the Feds for every bed they are able to fill. The only thing is, they have to contract ahead of time with these 'group homes', but when one of the bed-fillers goes AWOL and the bed is empty that night, then they can't collect from Uncle, even though they're still on the hook for the kid's bed.
'Training School'? Yeah, right. How many kids do you know who went to 'training school' that came out 'trained'? What a racket.

These "temporary community placements", might that also include working summer jobs in South County at the Providence Plantations, planting peas and picking potatoes?
The trouble with kids these days is that they have too much time on their hands, and don't go to bed tired like previous generations.
