Five will lead 'Rhode Island Women for Obama'
Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's campaign today announced five women who will head up Rhode Island Women for Obama, one of similar groups nationally the campaign says are organizing on Obama's behalf.
They are Johnnie Chace, Stephanie Chafee, former U.S. Attorney Meg Curran, State Sen. Maryellen Goodwin, D-Providence, and Kelly Taylor.
“Barack Obama, who was raised by a single mother, has a personal appreciation for the unique economic demands placed on women,” Chace said in the campaign's statement. “By reaching out, building consensus and working to find common ground, he will end the special interest politics of Washington and address the key challenges facing women -- whether it’s making affordable health care accessible to all families or protecting a woman’s right to chose -- not just with advocacy, but with action.”
An Obama campaign $1,000-per-person fund-raiser was held at Chace's Providence home in October.
The announcement comes as Obama's wife, Michelle, plans to visit Rhode Island tomorrow with an itinerary that includes speaking at an event launching Rhode Island Women for Obama.
Obama, the Illinois senator, and Hillary Clinton, the New York senator, are squaring off for the Democratic nomination and Rhode Island's March 4 primary -- the same day Texas, Ohio and Vermont holds theirs -- may prove important.
Hillary Clinton will visit Rhode Island this Sunday. Her campaign announced its local managers yesterday.
