Biden in Rhode Island Tuesday
U.S. Sen. Joe Biden, a potential 2008 presidential candidate, is headed to Rhode Island tomorrow in a quest for campaign dollars.
The $500-a-head fundraiser is being hosted for Biden at the law offices of St. Peter & Kasle by Frank McMahon of Advocacy Solutions, a public-relations and State House lobbying firm, and lawyer Gary St. Peter.
Biden, D-Delaware, is the latest of the potential presidential candidates to visit Rhode Island in recent months.
On the Democratic side, Senators Hillary Rodham Clinton, of New York, and Barack Obama, of Illinois, came through to boost Senator-elect Sheldon Whitehouse’s candidacy; on the Republican side, Sen. John McCain, of Arizona, swept through twice to help now-lame duck Sen. Lincoln D. Chafee, and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani lent Governor Carcieri a hand.
The Democratic takeover of the Senate has put Biden in a position to return to the chairmanship of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, where he will be in a position to weigh in on Iraq policy and other crucial issues. The post, which he last held in 2003, provides him with a platform.
Immediately following Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld’s post-election resignation, Biden said: "We have a narrow window before 2008 kicks in to get a bipartisan consensus on Iraq. Staying the course would be terrible for the national interest. It also happens to be against the political interests of both parties. Republicans don’t want to run in 2008 with Iraq around their necks. Democrats don’t want to assume the White House in 2009 saddled with a losing war.”
Appearing on CBS’s Face the Nation in June 2005, Biden said: “My intention is to seek the nomination. … I know I’m supposed to be more coy with you. I know I’m supposed to tell you, you know, that I’m not sure. But if, in fact, I think that I have a clear shot at winning the nomination. … then I’m going to seek the nomination.”
