Sox fans can snicker at Yankees over candy ban

Red Sox fans can rejoice. The Yankees officially took themselves out of the pennant race earlier this season when manager Joe Girardi banned candy from the clubhouse.

He even went as far to contact other teams and request that they remove the candy from the visitors clubhouse when the Yankees come to play.

You can bet this managerial error will mark the beginning of end for the Joe Girardi era. Joe Torre would never have made such a rookie mistake. Veteran players will lose faith in a guy who doesn't trust them. After all, most of them probably know enough to stop after the third Kit Kat. You can't treat Major Leaguers like Little Leaguers.

The baseball season is a grind. Doesn't Girardi know that his team will hit the wall in August without Snickers bars and Peanut M&M's to carry them into the 9th inning? Baseball has already cracked down on amphetamines. And now players are supposed to go from first to third without the benefit of a Skittles buzz?

If Girardi is concerned that players are too fat, he must know that some of the Yankees best players have been portly guys. Think Babe Ruth or even David Wells. What's the big deal? Sure, conditioning plays a role in baseball, but it's not like Girardi is managing golfers.

And the Yankees can forget about signing top free agents. Major League players have it tough enough. Some of these guys are already required to carry their own bags.

How do you think Johnny Damon feels about leaving Boston and signing with the Yankees? It was one thing to make him cut his hair. Now the manager is saying he can't eat Twizzlers between innings.
