Airlines have lowered the altitude for a successful flight

My first flight was delayed for more than 2 1/2 hours, and I had to spend most of that time waiting in the small, crowded plane.

I missed my connecting flight and got to California more than two hours late.

On my return trip across the country, my first flight was delayed about a half hour, which made me worry that I'd miss my connecting flight.

I didn't have to worry since that flight was delayed 1 1/2 hours, enabling me to spend three hours killing time in Newark International Airport.

As it turned out, my flying experience was wildly successful. After all, my airline didn't go out of business, or cancel the flights.

I spent part of my recent trip to the West Coast reading stories about airlines shutting down and flights being cancelled. Waiting at the airport in Newark, I caught a television report about four unnamed airlines under investigation for shoddy maintenance work. (I wondered if I should rent a car.) In the past few days, American Airlines has cancelled hundreds of flights.

We're scheduled to fly to Florida tomorrow for a family vacation. Hopefully, our airline won't go out of business or decide to cancel hundreds of flights between now and then.

If we're only delayed a few hours, it will be another wildly successful trip.
