And you thought low-number plates were big in Rhode Island

Is Rhode Island overlooking a surefire cure for its budget woes?

Rhode Islanders have a legendary affection for low-number license plates. (You must be somebody if you've got a low-number plate, right?) But has the state considered that some people are willing to pay millions for the right plate?

At least some people who live in the United Arab Emirates are willing to pay that much.

CNN reports on a stockbrocker there who paid $6.8 million for plate No. 5.

The stockbrocker told CNN that he's willing to pay $15 to $20 million for plate No. 1 when it goes on auction Feb. 16.

And we thought it was a big deal when a guy paid $25,000 for Rhode Island plate No. 7 back in 1986.

Even with inflation, I don't think that comes anywhere close to $15 or $20 million.
