How did we ever make it through winter back when the Patriots were lousy?
Who got us through the cold, dark days of January before Tom Brady and his teammates started carrying us from September until February?
Sure, winters seemed longer and colder when we were younger, but don't blame global warming. Back then, we just didn't have a team in Foxboro that could dig us out of the snowdrifts.
If you're a Pats' fan, you might not have even noticed the frigid temperatures this weekend, unless you were lucky enough to sit in the stands at Gillette Stadium Sunday for the Patriots' AFC Championship win over the San Diego Chargers.
It's already late January, and we still have nearly two more weeks to ignore the cold and talk football -- to fret about Brady's possible leg injury, to try deciphering Bill Belichick -- before the undefeated Patriots take on the New York Giants Feb. 3 in the Super Bowl.
Like a running back heading for the end zone, we're turning a corner on winter, with the Patriots out front blocking for us. The sun lingers just a little longer each day before it sets. L.L. Bean has already started burying our mailboxes with its blizzard of spring catalogues. And we're still worried about football games. Isn't it great?
It makes me wonder how the fans of lousy teams get through the winter? Do Jets' fans have to rely on the escapades of Britney Spears to take the chill out of the air?
Sure, we might get hit with two feet of snow Feb. 4th, but, hopefully, we'll be basking in the warmth of another Super Bowl victory. If not, we'll have only 13 days until the Red Sox start spring training.
