PETA barks about Mitt's treatment of family mutt

Animal rights activists are "howling" over presidential candidate Mitt Romney's treatment of the family dog, according to the Boston Herald's Inside Track.

When they say "howling," they don't mean laughing. Does anyone from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals laugh about anything?

If you read Wednesday's Offbeat, you're familiar with the story. Back in 1983, Romney drove the family to Canada for a vacation. Faced with a crowded car -- Romney and his wife have five sons, after all -- Romney drove the 12 hours with the clan's Irish setter in a car carrier strapped to the roof of the station wagon.

The Boston Globe told the story as part of its series on the former Massachusetts governor. The Inside Track calls it a "Clark Griswold-esque" tale.

The Inside Track quotes PETA President Ingrid Newkirk saying, “If you wouldn’t strap your child to the roof of your car, you have no business doing that to the family dog!"

Didn't we tell you this would cost Mitt the mutt vote?

I really think the people at PETA need to lighten up after all I wouldn't allow my kids to stick their heads out the window but my dog seems to love it lol. Was the dog harmed no, could he have been yes if they got into a car accident or if the straps came undone, but then again the dog could have been injured in the car also. The funniest thing about all this, is that sometimes groups like PETA and others do things that one would say, gee isn't that what they are fighting against. Just be happy he took the dog with him and didn't leave him at home unattended. I'll be any money that dog had a better time on the roof of the car then he did if he was in the car lol

Dogs bark, but the caravan moves on.

Someone on the Times blog said it best:

"Take a look, also, at the children in this heartwarming little anecdote. In other families, the kids would be crying and pleading with Dad to "puhleeeze don't put him up there on the roof" but Mitt's boys just thought the dog losing his bowels was 'gross'. And apparently Mom just sat there smiling on her cute brood while they abused the family pet. These people are deranged. Every last one of them."
