Girl, 13, 2 boys, 16, nabbed in Providence teen murder

PROVIDENCE -- A 13-year-old girl and two 16-year-old boys have been arrested in connection with the murder of a 19-year-old man in the city’s Smith Hill neighborhood, police said.

The 19-year-old victim, Jeffrey Lopez, was shot and killed as he sat on his porch with his friend, Carlos Javier, also 19.

A bullet grazed Javier’s back, but he was not seriously injured.

Today, police cruisers are parked outside the house at 145 Camden Ave. –– across the street from the Camden Elementary School Playground –– where the shooting occurred last night.

The shooting was retaliation, the police said, for a minor altercation on the street earlier in the night.

The two boys face murder and murder conspiracy charges. The girl, who is the sister of one of the male suspects, faces assault with a dangerous weapon.

The police say at about 8:30 p.m. she went inside to get a gun to scare the other group of kids, and one of the other suspects allegedly fired two shots, hitting Lopez in the back of the neck, and grazing Javier in the back.

Lopez was pronounced dead at Rhode Island Hospital this morning.

Lopez’s murder was the 8th homicide of the year in the city and the third in less than two weeks.

I hope they all rot in prison.

more motivation for the state to re establish the death penalty.

paul | July 1, 2008 11:45 AM link

Take each one of the parents to prison with them.

Kelly | July 1, 2008 12:17 PM link

The parent(s) of the 13 yr old girl should be ashamed and locked up as well. 13 years old, come on where is this society going??????????

disgusted | July 1, 2008 12:31 PM link

It's really sad how the suspects get younger and younger each time.

Denise | July 1, 2008 12:34 PM link

We need to have more conversations about poverty as a public health issue that affects us all. I think all of these young people are victims, not only the deceased. We need to take a hard look at how poverty operates in our communitities, and especially how it affects people of color and other marginalized populations. We are all to blame for the kind of climate that breeds desperation, hopelessness and despair.

Michele | July 1, 2008 12:41 PM link

Can't we all just get along?? They will go to camp training school and be out when they are 21. The liberals in this state will make sure of that.

dan | July 1, 2008 12:50 PM link

The parents should definately be charged with Involuntary Manslaughter for allowing access to a gun by a 14 year old girl.

Jeff | July 1, 2008 1:06 PM link

I agree with Kelly....where were the parents when all of this was going on? To all of the parents in the neighbood and throughout the state for that matter: you can't find any activities to keep your teens busy? Do you really have no idea what goes on in the neighborhood? Do you really think they won't be involved in some sort of trouble with nothing to do but hang out. Really, it does seem to matter if its South Providence, or Barrington..there is trouble when there is no adult supervision.

Karen | July 1, 2008 1:16 PM link

forgive the spelling error- it DOES NOT seem to matter if it is South Providence or Barrington- teens without parental/adult supervision will get into trouble

k | July 1, 2008 1:44 PM link

I agree that poor people are victims. But having children they can't take care of is also a problem. If you can't raise your child properly, then maybe you should think twice about having one.

ba | July 1, 2008 2:28 PM link

We shouldn't blame the parents . They made there own chioce under thir own influnence . These parents i personaly know they done everthing to prevent this but the exposure of drugs & gang violence ovbiously had more of an influnece on there kids then they did.

noi | July 1, 2008 2:49 PM link

This is a sad situation so many young lives destroyed. There is so much truth in that old saying "Sometimes it takes an entire village to raise a child" These parents need help so that they can help themselves and their children
How do we get there Violent crimes do seem to be committed by younger and younger people.
I believe more outreach programs are needed, no matter what the cost. There is no price for a human life. Maybe someone can convince the politicians to give up expense reports so that programs could be funded. Only a thought.

You parents out there blame these childrens acts on their parent! You should be ashamed of yourselves. You raise your children to be the best children and teach them respect and morals. This generation the children are forced to be around this type of enviroment not just because of poverty. You can have all the money in the world and teach your children right from wrong then it is up to them to choose theire path. No parent wants to see theire children hurt/killed or in prison from the rest of theire life but it does happen in rich or poor families. It is good morals for two grown young men to assult a 13 year old girl!! This would have never happen if PARENTS as you say taught the children respect and morals toward young little 13 year old girls. THE PARENTS IN THIS SITUATION ARE THE ONE HURTING. THEY NEED TO SEE COMMENTS FROM PARENTS WHO CRITIZE THEM WHEN THEY DON'T KNOW THEM. WOULD IT HAVE BEEN OK IF TWO YOUNG MEN RAPE OR SHOT AND KILLED THIS LITTLE 13 YEAR GIRL???? WHAT IF THAT WAS YOUR LITTLE GIRL BEING ASSULTED BY TO GROWN MEN??

Kelly | July 1, 2008 3:52 PM link

Parents? Are you serious? There's probably no father in sight and the mother? She had those kids herself when she was 15. This is the way of life for the impoverished. They don't know any better. Dumb and poor.

Sarah | July 1, 2008 3:55 PM link

No parents = idiot kids. The only difference is that the kids in Barrington are getting into trouble on expensive power boats. The poor urban kids are getting in trouble at the local playground.

Trixie | July 1, 2008 3:57 PM link

I don't know where I would go to get a gun if I wanted one. How do children know where to find one? This is a failure of their parents and their community as well as the little scumbags who did this.

Rich | July 1, 2008 3:58 PM link

noi- i believe you're wrong. the parents clearly did not do enough to be present in their children's lives. that's a case of parents NOT caring. when you don't know where your child is, when your children are doing drugs and out shooting people at 13 years old- THERE'S A PROBLEM WITH THE PARENTS/GUARDIANS!

kristina | July 1, 2008 4:00 PM link

I blame the parents for only leaving the gun available to their children.(if the article is correct) The persons involved in this are teenagers they know right from wrong. The parents could have been at work. There is way to much violence in providence something needs to be done.
WE need community programs that parents can afford.maybe we should think about leaving kids in school all year long, this would keep them busy, more education would be a great benefit to the kids.

karen | July 1, 2008 4:13 PM link

Parents first and friends last, the problem is clear what you have is kids are having kids and they raise their kids as their friends instead of as their children. You see a child at birth is like a newly home being built, if the foundation isn't strong there sure to be destruction. Thats what these kids out here are causeing every time they take anothers life, complete destruction. You see my dad told me a long time ago when I reached that age where I thought I've become a man, he said son we all must change with time for if we don't we'll be lost. See our city is lost for they refuse to change with time, it's time we reinstate the DEATH PENALTY.

A concern parent from south providence | July 1, 2008 4:22 PM link

The entire area should be fenced off like Escape from New York.

Rod | July 1, 2008 4:35 PM link

Government funding isn't the only answer. Education for parents, education for children, neighbors reaching out, people connecting instead of judging, ban the rediculous video games that desensitize and devalue human life and LOVE our children, listen to them and value them!!!

Judy | July 1, 2008 5:26 PM link

What else would you expect from hanging out on Camden Street... access to guns, drugs, and a life style that condons and admires violence. If any of us got high, watched a couple of episodes of MTV2, played a few rounds of Grand Theft Auto, listened to some Gangsta rap, our mind set may be changed. Do this on a daily basis when you are young and impressionable and some attitudes will change. I don't blame the parents; there were neglectful parents since day one, but the violence driven society is a realitively new phnomenon. And actually my grandfather said it best about 50 years ago, if you have a gun, sooner or later it's going to go off.

betters | July 1, 2008 5:27 PM link

What is wrong with these kids now a days i have a child who is 11 and i am always telling him what is right and wrong and i watch the news with him and he can't beleive what is going out in the world today where are these kids parents?

DEB | July 1, 2008 6:34 PM link

its not all the parents fault. its the neiborhood you live in. surrounded by gang culture. older influences. america glamourizes violence, gangs, drugs, whether your in compton or providence. there are access to guns, whether your 13 or 30. there is no age limit to guns in the streets.and there is a difference between south providence and barrington. ppl say ur influenced with your surroundings. and if your surroundings is drugs gangs and gun play. then u yourself will get involved. if you dont think so look at the crime rates in both cities. the difference between barrington and providence is barrington u need money to live there and there isnt any of this style violence there. providence has its provity strucken areas. guaranteed if those kids lived in barrington. they would have lived a different lifestyle. its easy for you ppl to blame the parents. wen u see the lifestyle and how it is in the hood then u would understand how life for a teenager is like.
