Marco Riz, 26, is arraigned in District Court, Providence, on two counts of first-degree sexual assault.

During a four-minute arraignment this morning in Providence District Court, Marco Riz, 26, was ordered held without bail on two counts of first-degree sexual assault.

Riz, an illegal immigrant from Guatemala, is accused of raping a 30-year-old woman on June 8 in Roger Williams Park.

Magistrate Joseph T. Ippolito made the ruling as Riz, handcuffed and shackled, listened to the charges through an interpreter. Six sheriffs stood in the small courtroom, along with members of the victim’s family, who did not speak. Riz, who showed no emotion, did not speak, either.

Riz is accused of kidnapping the woman from the parking lot in a Stop & Shop on Route 2 in Warwick, then driving her –– in the Ford SUV in which she was sitting, waiting for her mother –– to the park.

The police say Riz -- who has used at least a dozen aliases, including Saul Pizzarro-Aviles, the name police first made public -- had just been fired from his job Sunday when he saw the woman in the idling vehicle.

Riz also faces a kidnapping and robbery charge in Warwick.

He should get life in prison and the Guatemala Consulate who was running his mouth in Newport should pay the bill

Nancy | June 16, 2008 11:57 AM link

How did he get a job? How can we punish the business? We need to hold the businesses repsonsible for the hiring. This is tragic but inevitable, there are more there has to be. With all the illegals we are not getting the best of their society how could we?

horrendous. it will be interesting to see/learn of this guy was EVER in the custody of the providence police dept.

todd | June 16, 2008 12:23 PM link

I am confused as to why is arraigment took 4 minutes and the guy who killed the fireman took 2 days. Both of these should have taken 4 minutes and put the 2 of them in a cell together for the rest of their lives.

Why should the legal citizens of RI flip the bill?? Just deport him and save us thousands of dollars!!!

FK | June 16, 2008 12:47 PM link

Good point on his employer. Hopefully some arm of law enforcement is looking at his application and supporting paperwork. Unless they were duped by phony papers they should be fined for the fleecing of America by these illegals.

Let's get E-Verify going once and for all for all employers. Is the General Assembly paying attention to this?

One of Kurt Vonnegut's favorite quotes was : "the earth is the insane asylum for the universe".Is there a better way to explain the presence of individuals such as Mike Riz among us ?

john | June 16, 2008 2:12 PM link

If you take a look at our prison system the majority of predatory child sex offenders and rapists are white males not illigal immigrants.

Jesse | June 16, 2008 2:27 PM link

Why are these protesters sticking up for these criminals. Any country should have the right to allow good law abiding citizens only. How would South America feel if we deported all of our criminals to thier home land. They wouldn't accept it for a minute.

John | June 16, 2008 2:29 PM link

Jesse,
So what? Nice try at making an inane point. Try spellcheck while you're at it.

Rhode Islanders never miss a beat when it comes to voicing their endless opinions. Why does the Journal only ever seem to allow comments on stories that end up becoming hate blogging about illegal immigrants, etc...
I'd love to comment on the budget situation, but there's rarely a venue for it here.

I already know RI is full of intolerant, entitled good old boys. I don't need to see their misspelled verbal diarrhea every time I read an online article.
Its time for projo to at least enable equal opportunity comments.

PS- Guatemala is in Central, not South America... idiots

I don't believe deportation is all that effective, (unfortunately) as it isn't followed through as closely as it should be. As a taxpayer, I hate the thought of "paying his way" in jail, however at least we will know for sure where he is so he cannot sneak back into this country and do it to some other poor woman.

E-verify is good for everyone... it prevents the illegals from being exploited, it prevents citizens jobs from being illegally given to foreigners, and it benefits the federal and state governments who are guaranteed to get the previously missing tax revenues to which they are due (lessening the burden on us taxpaying citizens).

The only ones who don't like e-verify are the illegals, and the corporations who have been making a killing giving citizens jobs to undocumented illegals. They do this to avoid paying fair market wages, TDI insurance, and payroll taxes, thereby allowing those same corporations to feather their wallets at everyone elses expense.

Enough is enough already.

I applaud E-verify, the people who legislate to make it law, and Governor Carcieri who had the guts to take on this un-pc hot potato and do the right thing by enforcing e-verify registration requirements for companies and vendors doing business with the state.

Go E-Verify!

Hmmm...I wonder why the PPD worked so hard to get this guy caught. Too bad they didn't work this hard for me when I got raped at gunpoint 3 years ago, 2 weeks after I had my son. It makes people (well, at least me) wonder if it all comes down to the race of the victim. Me being a miniority and all. I know these crimes happen alot, but what made this case different and more special from all the rest of the cases? Does anyone know? Maybe someone can help me with this.

Anom | June 16, 2008 7:12 PM link

Great point about the employer. We can't look the other way when employers hire illegals. They should face serious penalties. Their argument is always these are jobs americans don't want which is false. As for this person, he needs a long stretch in the state pen then deport him. Also, ICE should check this guy's residence, I bet you'll find at least 3 or 4 more illigals in the house.

Josh | June 16, 2008 7:31 PM link

Number one if they deport him he may not get the punishment he may very well deserve.Numer two what happened to innocent until proven guilty?
We have more home grown perverts , rapists and sex offenders than immigrants ones.If we hold against a whole race for what a few do than there is no hope for humanity to become better than it is right now. That is truly prejudice at it's worse. That is what alot of these post's sound like.

Mary | June 16, 2008 9:41 PM link

I'm an inmigrant but a successful person right now for you it's easy to point all of us as illegals but most of us come here looking for an american dream. If you see we work don't wait at home for welfare checks, and if it's the situation the money is use for food, not for drugs or other things that white people or americans use for....
So, please do not point us as bad people.

adriana | June 16, 2008 9:45 PM link

why hate the ilegals if they work so hard, when a 80% of the us citizens just think in smock marihuana and get drunk, just because 1 of 1000 took the wrong way doesnt mean all of them will do the same.

charl | June 16, 2008 10:18 PM link

It makes you wonder if he had ever done this kind of thing before. If he wasn't here illegaly we would know if he had a past criminal record. Our country was founded by immigrants and there dreams of freedom and a better life. America, despite it's problems, is the greatest country in the world and still offers those opportunities for everyone. A civilized sociaty must have laws and everyone must abide by those laws.

We all pay the price for illegal immigrants in one way or the other, but this poor woman has paid a devastating price for this criminal to be here. Perhaps the Guatemalan embacy should focus more on helping it's citizens obey the law instead of protesting against owr laws. As for this animal, he should never be allowed to see the light of day again.

William A Pellegrino | June 17, 2008 6:20 AM link

Can't this guy be directly deported to a Guatamalan prison? That way, he can't come back to the US illegally for a while at least. If he's just deported, he'll just get back here like they all do. Not only that, he probably committed this crime on purpose to have free housing in our prison at our expense....again.

Disgusted | June 17, 2008 6:31 AM link

It amazes just how easily we forget what is and is not important in our society. Our problem is not really illegal immigrants, citizens or what ever we choose to make our mistakes about. Our problem is that we live in a society that chooses to spend money on bull and not pay attention to matters that hit closely to home. A women has been brutally victimized and what we need to do is severly punish this criminal. Not sentence him and then deport but make him live his life horribly in a prison cell. All we can hope is that he trully gets what he deserves. The fact that we as human beings cannot walk freely in our society only makes it that much easier to realize that this country, and our world is trully more dangerous than anyone of us could ever imagine.

Obama's health national health care plan covers illgals in this country. You will pay for this too if Obama becomes President. This will encourage more illegals to come here. Yet you Rhode Islanders will go to the polls in November and vote Obama. You will deserve what you get Wake Up!
