Newport police keeping an eye on cyclists

The Newport police are stepping up enforcement of bicycle laws this summer after receiving complaints from the community, according to a statement.

The main focus will be on helmet and sidewalk violations. Anyone 15 or younger is required to wear a helmet and riders 13 and older are prohibited from city sidewalks.

The police will also use message boards to remind cyclists of the laws. The police have held bicycle safety classes for young riders to make sure they know what the rules are and how to ride safely.

And don’t forget. Stop at stop signs and red lights and always obey the rules of the road, whether you’re on two wheels or four.

Just so I get this straight, the Newport "community" complains to the police about cyclists, so the police will start to make sure the cyclists are wearing helmets, if they're kids?

That doesn't make much sense. Sounds like the police now have a reason to hassle kids on bikes who don't have a helmet, because other cyclists are either riding on sidewalks, or maybe just riding on the street.Hmmmmmmm.

Never enough reasons to stop people on the street, are there?

Sure, those who ride down the crowded sidewalk on Lower Thames should be told to ride in the street instead, but let's play tit-for-tat here. The City of Newport can hardly get off scot-free. After all, how many miles of bike lanes are there in Newport? Zero. When was the last time the city striped a bike lane? Never.

This in a city that is practically tailor-made for cycling - it's compact, traffic-choked, short of parking, relatively flat, and full of tourists, sailors, and students. Enforcement is great, but I want the city of Newport to stop giving cycling short shrift! How about promoting a form of transportation that's healthy, fast, and green instead of simply telling people where to park their cars?
