Filming for Cianci movie to begin in R.I. in August

Michael Corrente said today that he will begin shooting his long-planned film about former Providence Mayor Vincent A. "Buddy" Cianci Jr. in August on Rhode Island locations.

Corrente verified a report that appeared in the Hollywood Reporter that director Steven Soderbergh, whose films include Ocean’s Eleven and Twelve, would be the executive producer of The Prince of Providence and that Oliver Platt would play the former mayor.

The film, which Corrente will direct, is based on the best-selling book by Providence Journal investigative reporter Mike Stanton. David Mamet wrote the screenplay, with an additional writing credit going to Howard Korder.

Corrente said that Platt, whom he courted as early as late last August when he brought him to Providence for a dinner at a posh restaurant, was perfect for the role. Platt was seen most recently as New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner in the eight-part HBO series The Bronx Is Burning and his credits include the films Kinsey and The Three Musketeers.

Corrente praised Platt as a journeyman actor that everyone knows can do what Philip Seymour Hoffman did for Capote.’’ (Hoffman won the best actor Academy Award in 2006 for his performance in that film. “I feel this is Oliver’s chance to hit one out of the park,’’ added Corrente.

In the past, Corrente had negotiated with better-known movie stars fort the lead role of Buddy Cianci, including Nicolas Cage and Russell Crowe, who at one time was said to be working on a rewrite of the script.

But for a long time the role went unfilled and some people were beginning to say that the film would never be made. “Everyone thought I was dragging my feet on this,’’ he said, “but I was just waiting for the right actor."

Your turn: Does Oliver Platt fit the role?

Excellent news. Imagine a screenplay by David Mamet!!! I can only imagine that Buddy is going to try and pull every stunt he can to distract this filming. I imagine that he will manage to sabatoge something with his minions and wanna be groupies. Since he has that big microphone in front of his big face these days, he forgets that he was convicted of crimes against the city and its residents and thinks that its life as usual. I hope that the movie is well directed and acted and reaches a large audience.

Paul,
I think Buddy might be happy to be in the limelight again. I can't wait for this movie. When will there be a casting call? I want a part!!

Interesting and "Buddy" is definitley a character worthy of a write-up/story, but I just can't imagine that much interest in the film outside of New England and, particularly Rhode Island. This will be a national theatrical release? I wouldn't have much interest in, say, plucking down 8 bucks to see a movie about a dethroned former Seattle mayor (as an example)........ Best of luck to the filmmakers however. Ya never know........ :-)

Could someone tell these movie folks about crazy Mayor Susan Menard? I'll start my book tonight!

Didn't Corrente learn his lesson from his last movie 'Brooklyn Rules' which starred Alec Baldwin, Freddie Prince Jr, Jerry Ferrara, and Scott Caan - I mean how can you go wrong with a cast like that? Decent movie even though it was filled with gangster cliches and fake New York accents. The production budget of $8 million and a box office take so far... drum roll please...$458,232. The Prince of Providence book was well timed but the movie is about two years too late - even if it was released this Fall. The only guy laughing all the way to the bank is Mike Stanton, aka Mark Twain.

Besides RI, who cares about the life of a two time felon who served as Mayor of small time, capitol city? Buddy Cianci was small potatoes compared to the likings of corrupt mayors such as former Mayor Rizzo of Philadelphia and former Mayor Daley of Chicago.

I live in Orlando-(former East-Sider), but when that casting call comes up for extras or whatever, I will be jumping on the first Southwest airline flight back to Providence! Most East-siders still love Buddy-But most keep that opinion to themselves-Not me! I LOVE YOU BUDDY!

Susan,
It would seem logical that you have a brain scan performed in the near future.

Going back to Cianci's earlier days when he was an Asst Atty General, ask him about the time I had him on roller skates at the old Riverdale Roller Rink in Warwick.
I beleive it was for a championship event or the opening of the facility.

I will like to come out as Cianci in the movie.
I have lived in Providence all my life. And I am an actor.
