Accused kidnapper, rapist is kicked and shoved in jail

A man accused of carjacking, robbing and raping a woman June 8 was pushed and kicked by two men who were in custody with him at the ACI Intake Center, according to a state Department of Corrections spokeswoman.

The incident happened before Marco Riz, 26, was arraigned yesterday in District Court, Providence, on two charges of sexual assault, according to Tracey Poole, spokeswoman for the Department of Corrections.

Two inmates also awaiting court appearances pushed and kicked him, according to Poole. It was captured on video, and the two inmates were charged with assault; Riz did not require any outside medical treatment, Poole said.

The Department will now evaluate whether Riz needs protective custody. “That’s something that we don’t do unless we really have to,” Poole said.

Riz is scheduled to appear in Kent County District Court today to face additional charges.

The police say he carjacked a woman in Warwick as she sat in an idling SUV at a grocery store. He then allegedly drove her in the car to Roger Williams Park in Providence and raped her.

Are we talking about the illegal alien who is accused of kidnapping and raping the innocent victim from Warwick? Just wanted to get that straight before I say....is that the best the Providence Journal has to print? Call me when he has his fair trial and all his constitutional rights are afforded him (even though he is in this country illegally) and he gets convicted after a costly trial (thats costly to you and me the taxpayers) and then he serves 10-15 years at the ACI (again at our expense). The focus should be on the innocent victim whose only crime was leaving her car door unlocked while her mother ran into the supermarket. My thoughts and prayers are with the victim and her family.

This guy deserves a lot worse than a kick and a shove.

Somehow I find it difficult to feel sorry for him, that he was pushed and kicked. His victim, who was kidnapped, robbed and RAPED has my total sympathy though!

Dan, ever think maybe they printed it because they knew their readers would derive some satisfaction from this? I surely did.

These atrocities were committed by an illegal immigrant. We need stronger laws to identify and deport anyone that enters our country illegally. These people did not obey our laws in entering the country, so why would we believe they would not commit crimes once they are here.

I am still waiting to hear why the Texas Roadhouse hired an illegal! Is anyone following up with this? Also, if you check out this guys name on the RI Judicial website, this isn't his first offense. He has been charged with domestic assault, dui blah blah blah. Why in the world didn't the RI Courts pick up on the fact that he is an illegal years ago. Maybe this tragedy could have been avoided if we sent him back to Guatemala a long time ago. When will we wake up? My thoughts and prayers are with the victim. Be strong.

I have an idea: how about everybody stops whining and crying about how much money this trial is going to cost the *citizens* of Rhode Island, and start realizing that justice for this victim includes (1) finding the guy who raped her, (2) putting him on trial (yes, that will cost money), (3) incarcerating him (despite more cost to the whining citizens of this state), and then (4) deciding whether or not to deport him (which, gasp, costs money as well). She deserves her justice, shut up about the cost. This has nothing to do with illegal immigrants, it's about rape. Stop using this woman's tragedy as a vehicle to make your racist comments and ignorant remarks.

Did I miss his trial? Was he convicted already? Geez, you guys work fast in Rhode Island.

These atrocities were committed by an illegal immigrant. We need stronger laws to identify and deport anyone that enters our country illegally. Illegal immigrants in our country did not obey our laws when they entered this country “illegally”, so why would we believe they would not commit crimes against our citizens while they are here.

It is disturbing to all citizens that such outrages as this occur in our State and all 49 others by illegal immigrants. It is time to construct and implement a decisive and permanent solution to this carnage and to the immigration problem. Until our selected representatives here and elsewhere discover that offering sanctuary is a failed policy we will continue to struggle with the pain, the loss and the cost of these illegal immigrant criminals among us. This is not a racist ideology, but a logical one. When people arrive here knowing that they are already in violation of the law they have no compunction to ABIDE BY THE REST OF THE LAWS WE HAVE ENACTED FOR AN ORDERLY SOCIETY. I feel for those immigrant families that are trying to assimilate and find better lives for their children, but, we cannot be responsible for their initial breach of the immigration laws to begin with. Many take the time, and truly aspire to follow our procedures to immigrate legally into our country, those that don't wish to take that time to do so legally shouldn't be wasting our resources, ruining lives and living "scot free" here.

I believe this is only the tip of an iceberg in this country. Americans are so self absorbed that they do not see how we are being abused by our leaders, lawmakers and the world. I am so ashamed that no one is speaking up and taking a stand. When a country sits back and allows a bafoon to run it not once but twice of course everything around us will slowly deteriorate. And how about that war on drugs, there are more available and easier to get than ever before and it would not surprise me if some came in on this wonderful fellas back. I really feel bad for the kids that are going to inherit whats left after the greed has eaten away at all the fabric that this country used to be made of. Yeah it is just the tip of the iceberg. I hope someone at intake gives him a little more of what he deserves. Hint(Let the punishment fit the crime) Oh yeah and lets make sure he gets due process too. Bleeding hearts must be cringing by now and they are certainly turning my stomach.

An eye for an eye will make the whole world blind.

jen | June 17, 2008 8:49 PM link

There are just as many atrocities committed by American citizens on a daily basis. I am not defendending the criminal only the ignorant belife that all illegal immigrants are horrible people. This country was built by immigration: do not be so blind to believe that horrific crimes are commited by one group of people.

Me thinks a bit of Clockwork Orange treatment will do him wonders. Are we supposed to feel compassion for a vile individual who defiles, humiliates and forever physically and emotionally damages an innocent woman? Note: has anyone in the media asked the victim how she and her family are doing, what they (the media) can do to help through the power of publication how are they healing, does she feel liek she got the proverbial kick and shove from the ingrate? Now that would be a giant progressive step forward.......

YOU PEOPLE THINK IS ABOUT ILLEGAL V LEGAL WE ARE TALKING ABOUT HUMANS.IF THIS GUY WAS IN GUATEMALA HE WOULD HAVE DONE THE SAME THING BUT WOULD HAVE ABUSE MORE THAN ONE PERSON BEFORE HE WOULD BE ARRESTED IN GUATEMALA.
