Update: Twin River acts fast on gambling-veto override

PROVIDENCE -- Within minutes of the General Assembly's override of Governor Carcieri's veto of legislation allowing weekend and holiday 24-hour gambling, a spokeswoman for Twin River said the Lincoln facility will begin round-the-clock gambling this weekend.

Spokeswoman Patti Doyle said Twin River will have an announcement tomorrow about promotions and services it will start offering at 2 a.m. this Saturday.

Amy Kempe, representing Newport Grand, said in a statement the only immediate plan is "to meet with the city" to address any of its concerns.

The Senate voted 24 to 8 to override shortly after the House voted 51 to 16 to do so.

The override -- which had been expected -- paves the way for the two video-slot emporiums to begin offering round-the-clock gambling on weekends and during overnight hours before state and federal holidays.

Carcieri, a Republican, vetoed the legislation on Monday that had won approval in the House and Senate of the Democrat-dominated General Assembly. The governor cited opposition by host towns as a key reason.

But the legislature pushed past the veto today.

It's been estimated that expansion in gambling hours will upward of $14 million in new money for the cash-strapped state. Meanwhile, The Journal reported today that the state's tax revenues have seen a sharp decline.

All of you legislators who voted for this legislation, along with the Twin River and Newport Grand executives and all the others who probably bribed the legislators to do it, have put their souls in major jeopardy. You think that God isn't watching? You're wrong.

I live in lincoln and the 24 gambling is a joke. Once again the politicans have their heads do far up their butts where the sun doesn't shine. Of course, i blame the former administrator, Sue Sheppard, who ran to another politican whose name is nothing more than something you wipe your shoe off after you stepped in it, thats right, senator montalbano. He filed a bill and changed the law, taking away the park's decisions to stay open from the tax payers to the knuckleheads at the state house. Is amazing, I think if you added up all of the iq's at the general assembly, you might get 100. As far as im concerned, their all perverts and crooks.

when i die someday, i hope i can see all of them burn in eternity in the devil's general assembly.

I am so proud of our General Assembly....NOT!!!
Once again they showed their lack of common sense. The next election, I will vote against every incumbent I am able to. Those people are an embarrassment to the state and should be voted out. Can the ones we vote in be worse than the buffoons already in there?
