Reporter's query: Seeking Classical teachers for reax

Emily Perry is a senior at Classical High School in Providence who gave a speech before alumni at an awards dinner on April 30.

In her speech, Perry took aim at the quality of many teachers at the school, saying there were "far too many" teachers who "operate on cruise control," and saying that the administration needed to "demand more" from its teachers.

For a possible Providence Journal story, we are seeking reaction from Classical High School teachers to Perry's speech. Please contact Journal staff writer Linda Borg at lborg@projo.com

Looking for teachers that took issue with the speech? What about the ones who think she is correct and agree that something needs to be done? Is there any interest in hearing from them or is saying there is a problem taboo?

How about, if you're going to write a credible story about Classical HS, you spell the word "reaction" correctly?

I'm with Joe on that one, are you an alumni perhaps? Anyway, the story is nothing new. The teachers at Classical High School have been sub par for years.

The quality of teachers at Classical is embarrassing. They are overburdened, under qualified, and are in dire need of some motivation. What supposedly used to be a first rate school is now a joke.

I, as a student in Classical High School agree with Emily. I am an underclassman but my sister is part of the graduating class and knows Emily well. Emily isn't the type of student who would go out of her way to make people mad. She is a level headed and thoughtful student who measures her words carefully. I have read the comments on this site and I would not go so far as to say that the quality of teachers at the school is "embarrassing", however certainly some teachers are more willing then others to go the extra mile. Students in the school come in with various leave of preparedness and some students are far above the average, and their needs are as important as those who require extra help. As for Emily's speech, it was like a mirror, it reflected thoughts and ideas that some people would prefer to ignore. Emily never said that her education at CHS was a waste and just walking into Classical you know that the education here is NOT a waste, I have benefited more then I can say.
