Yay! Nepotism is NOT dead!!

My sentiments exactly...think the fact that it's his brother had anything to do with getting that city job?

To the previous poster - are you SERIOUS? Since when is it nepotism for a younger brother to follow in the footsteps of his older brother by choosing the same career path? Or that of his father? Or his mother, sister, aunt, uncle? Public service tends to run in families because of a shared, intrinsic set of values. Do you think that the career choice of one brother should preclude the other from pursuing his own goals?
Further, looking at the two young men in the photo, knowing absolutely nothing else about them, how are you even remotely qualified to judge whether the new officer, or his brother, are qualified, capable police officers? Nepotism, by the way, must involve some favoritism, or exploiting of the familial relationship. You have no evidence that this was the case here, but instead of celebrating the choice of two young men to devote themselves to public service, you fling accusations at them blindly. Please stop the wholesale dismissal of their achievements. Would you have even raised this if the officers' last name was Rossi? O'Hara? I suspect you're not as color blind as you claim.

Congratulations to both Officers Carvalho and to their parents too. They should all be very proud.

Nothing makes it sinister that members of the same family become public safety officers either as law enforcement officers or fire fighters. I see nothing wrong with it provided those family members legitimately pass all the required testing and training. On the other hand, this can be a problem within those agencies where favoritism is given to family members for special assignments and easy positions. In that regard, nepotism is wrong. I'm sure this never happens....NOT!

All of the graduates had to first qualify to enter the program before going through months of training and tests to finally reach their goal of becoming a Police Officer. Nepotism cannot get an individual through the program. And, the Carvalho brothers were not the only relative/sibling team (re: the pin ceremony). I am sure it was an absolute honor for the fathers, and brothers who are officers to be able to pin the badges on their loved ones. Give all of these men the honor and respect they deserve. They have the courage and fortitude to take on a very demanding occupation.

How could one person think that being a brother could bypass the physical and emotional training one has to endure to become a police office. How about looking at the person and thanking them for taking on a job where they lay their lives on the line everyday for the safety of civilians. I would like to say good luck and god bless to the Carvalho family.

The entire Carvalho Family is undoubtedly very proud of these fine, brave young men's achievements, and I salute them as well!

Hurrah!
Two fine young men.
Why is accomplishment derided?
Typical Rhode Island cynicism.

Congratulations to my brother-in-law on a job well done. I KNOW you put in a lot of hard WORK and long hours that took you away from your family at times, but you did it...on your own!!! What an honor it was watching my husband pin his younger brother. I know that they both have worked very hard to achieve the positions, that they today, hold. No one can take away what they have worked so hard to achieve!!! Congratulations Officer Everett and Sgt. John Carvalho...LOve you both

Congratulations to all the new members of the Providence Police Force and the people of the City of Providence. Sergeant Carvalho has earned a reputation as an outstanding law enforcement professional. I anticipate that Officer Everett Carvalho will also be a fine addition to the Capital Cities Law Enforcement Team and will excel in his new responsibilities.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!! Such an accomplishment should be celebrated and not criticized. Two young black men of Providence raised on the same streets that they are now going to protect and serve. High Five!!!

Kathy | May 2, 2008 11:51 AM link

So because his brother is on the department, he is not allowed to apply?

EMT | May 2, 2008 12:06 PM link

Congratulations to the graduate! Reading the comments entered by the readers...overwhelmingly negate the nepotism factor...Having been reared in Providence, I can tell you that I recall knowing brother's, cousins, brother-in-laws, among other status'...being hired by the Providence' finest...Oh, did I forget to say that this was when People of color were unable to wear the uniform? So to that person that made the comment about nepotism...know the history and please...get a life, this is the year 2008!

Congratulations to the Carvalho Family. What a honor to know a family of such dedication to family and the people. Congratulations again for all your hard work Dana. Good Luck:)

Congrats!! We are so proud of you. I personally, know you worked hard for this opportunity. You deserve to be standing right where you are. Your perseverance got you here. Some people are quick to judge, but they do not know how intense it was to prepare for training and how its demands and obligations kept you from having a consistent relationship with loved ones during your dedication to the academy. We wish you a blessed and safe career.
