CRANSTON - Juliet Vongphoumy became the first girl to win the Rhode Island Interscholastic League co-ed individual golf title as the La Salle freshman, playing from the women's tees, posted a final-round 77 today at the Cranston Country Club and captured the title in the 36-hole state tournament.

Vongphoumy's six-over performance, combined with an even-par 71 yesterday, gave her a 36-hole total of 148 and a two-stroke margin of victory over runner-up Justin Misiaszek of Burrillville.

In tomorrow's Journal and online at HSGameTime.com, Jim Donaldson will have a profile of Vongphoumy and her unusual road to the top of the state high school golf scene.

This is an example of how political correctness has RUINED our once great country. So what if she's better than all "The boys" in Rhode Island? If a boy wanted to play on a girls team, he would be told he's too big, and too strong. I guess in the minds of liberals there's no contradiction to that. Kinda like how they say affirmative action doesn't take jobs away from white males. Good for her, but the premise is ridiculous.

Great job, Juliet! Age 14? Amazing.

Umm, what's with Hickok? I can't follow the rant - is it good that she won or bad that she took first place away from a guy?

I don't see any politics in the article, but I guess I think it's correct that the best person won!

Congratulations Juliet! Keep hitting them long and straight. Golf is a wonderful game of skill, tradition, and personal achievement. Enjoy your victory.

Congrats to Juliet. In theory, the men and women tees are set up such that everyone (on the average) would be hitting the same clubs on a hole. Making a women hit from the mens tees would mean that while a guy is hitting a driver & 7-iron, a girl might have to hit a driver and a 3-iron (shich is a more difficult shot).
Oh, and by the way...she's only a Freshman.

Is that what Hickok was getting at? I was a little confused! In any case, congratulations Juliet! Hopefully you can inspire more young ladies to take up golf, a sport that could certainly use more female players and fans!

Congratulations Juliet!!! I am so proud of you. I've been reading about your amazing rounds all season, you really deserve the title.

For those of you who don't personally know Juliet, she is one the sweetest people you will ever meet. She works so hard on her game and is very passionate about golf. I have played with her in a few tournaments as well as in the girls tri-state matches held every year by the RIWGA. She is a joy to play with and to watch.

No girl has ever won this championship and I believe she deserves it just as much as any of the boys. I also played on a boys golf team in high school and was very fortunate to have many great experiences, which I hope she also has throughout high school.

I am very disappointed with the negative remark I saw in the comment section. I hope that everyone who reads this article understands what a great accomplishment rounds of even par 71 and 77 are for ANY golfer. Anyone who says she has "ruined our once great country" or the game of golf should be ashamed!!!

Congratulations again Juliet, this is an amazing accomplishment for a freshman! Good luck in the girls state championship.

I think the point Hickok is that this is a co-ed league tournament and she is the first female to win it. I dont think it has anything to do with a girl playing on a boys team or being better than the boys. Why must you ruin someone's accomplishment...?

Congratulation Juliet on your outstanding peformance. We are so proud of you.

You are such a great example and a role model to many kids as well as many adults in the community that want to pick up golf. We still remembered the first time your dad bring you to Button Hole to hang out with us. We know right away that you will become a star and a star you are. This accomplishment will inspire many kids and adults alike to go out and play golf.

Keep on working on your great golf game as well as your school. We know that you hit the golf balls really hard but we also know that you hit the books even harder...

Many thanks to your parents (Katie and Sam) and those who worked with you throughout the years.

Please continue making us proud...

Here's the point all you "Feel Good Folks" missed. SHE PLAYED BY DIFFERENT RULES !!! It is affirmative action by another name. While I agree with the comments from those who know her, she is a fine young lady, and also comes from a great family, she did not win on an equal playing field, period. A 700+ yard advantage is huge, and it was by her own choosing. So keep posting that it's an amazing feat, but it was done with an unfair advantage. I personally, would never allow myself, or my children to compete in an event where one of us got such an unfair start. Let's let girls get a 10 yard head start in the 100 yard dash against boys, etc., etc. You Feel-Gooders can't call it what it really is....The boys who came close to winning were cheated by this affirmative action rule, and nothing else. The R.I. Interscholastic League should be ashamed of themselves for creating this unfair advantage. Now I wait for your convoluted, illogical responses so I can have my daily chuckle.

Whooaaa Hickok, your assessment is wayyy out of line here...
I'm another junior girl who played at the boys' state tournament. I played from the red tees, like Juliet. I placed 4th overall. Golf is golf, whether you play from the tips or 50 yards from the green. The ball still has to get in the hole. Don't talk politics or "affirmitive action" to me, because I think it is BS anyway...a golf course is a golf course. Obviously you are not a golfer and would not understand its difficulty anyway. You cannot knock Juliet's accomplishment like this. Even though I am her competitor, I have to stand up for her on this one. Not to mention the fact that playing from a closer position can be a disadvantage sometimes. But, since I can tell you're not a golfer, it's not even worth explaining.

Samantha Morrell | June 6, 2008 9:44 PM link

Samantha,
Nice try, but your logic(or lack thereof)is not only silly, but downright ridiculous. "Golf is golf, whether you play from the tips or 50 yards from the green"? For the record, little girl, an 800 yard advantage is HUGE, however you cut the mustard. And, "Playing from a closer postion, can sometimes be a disadvantage"? That is so laughable I'll just let it stand on it's own, and not subject your logic to further ridicule. In conclusion, Lasalle has a Girl's team, and that's where she should be playing. How do you feel about the boys not being able to compete on a girls team, Samantha? That's called politically correct nonsense, and reverse discrimination in the real world. Your logic is so convoluted that you qualify to be on Hillary Clinton's campaign staff, putting out falsehoods every day, and then telling people that THEY"RE wrong. For the record, I'm a five handicap Sam, not a teenybopper wannbe golfer.
Have a nice day.
